The German economy contracted by 1 per cent in the second quarter of 2008, twice as fast as economists were anticipating, government officials told the Financial Times in August 2008. The surprisingly bad quarter-on-quarter figure was seen as the clearest sign to date that Germany’s robust recovery is coming to an end.
