Following weeks of unrest in Georgia following an allegedly rigged Parliamentary Election, Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze stepped down on 23 November 2003. Nino Burdzhanadze - an opposition leader - will serve as acting president until new elections take place within 45 days.
