Germany delays autobahn toll scheme

The German government postponed on the 31 July 2003 by two months the introduction of charges for lorries on motorways. The toll scheme, seen as the most technically sophisticated in Europe, will now come into effect on 2 November 2003, rather than on 31 August 2003, as planned. The delay followed intense industry criticism that the scheme's introduction was being rushed.
