Every medicine authorised for use in the European Union must first undergo rigorous tests to ensure that it is safe, of high quality and effective. But tests on adults do not necessarily provide sufficient guarantees for the use of medicinal products on children. Draft EU legislation aims to remedy this situation by requiring pharmaceutical companies to carry out paediatric trials to ensure that the same high standards apply to children.
