The European Investment Bank is lending health authorities in Martinique €25 million as part of a six-year plan to boost hospital care in the French island.

Centrepiece of the project is the construction of a 177-bed hospital, specialising in care for mothers and babies. Infant and prenatal mortality rates are currently twice the levels in the rest of France.

Other funds will go towards the modernisation and renovation of three other hospitals, as well as replacement of biomedical and IT equipment.

The Luxembourg-based EIB said it might supplement the loan, up to a final amount of €50 million.
