On 6.3.01, the European Commission adopted a regulation for emergency protection measures of the cod stock in the West of Scotland, as it was in imminent danger of collapse. These measures involved the closure, until 30.4.01, of two separate areas to all fisheries likely to catch cod. Technical and control measures were also imposed on a number of fisheries which would be allowed to continue in these two zones as they did not threaten cod. The Commission adopted similar measures to protect North Sea cod on 7.2.01. |
