British Conservative Euro MP Anne McIntosh is extremely pleased with the new researcher in her Brussels office.

It seems her latest helper has a magical touch in dealings with the Commission, able to squeeze information in a trice out of even the most reluctant official.

The minute her researcher comes on the line, the MEP reports, everybody is anxious to help, making sure calls are returned, making sure the right people get the right messages, and delivering everything an MEP could possibly ask for from the European Union's civil service.

All praise, then, to her researcher's tenacity and to the Commission's efficiency and spirit of cooperation.

But Miss McIntosh admits it probably helps that her new researcher's name is David Williamson.

No relation, it turns out, to the current Commission secretary-general.
