Memo: Report on women and science: the gender dimension as a leverage for reforming science

On 17.2.99, the European Commission adopted a Communication entitled 'Women and science: mobilising women to enrich European research', which acknowledged the severe under-representation of women in science and set out an action plan to be implemented during the Fifth Framework Programme. This is being implemented as planned, but the positive results should not obscure the difficulties related to the gender issue in research. It should also be remembered that the situation of women in science is similar to that of women in general.
