Jack Straw, UK foreign secretary, used a visit to British troops in Macedonia on 30 August 2001, to warn that further international economic aid was dependent on the country's parliament approving constitutional reforms designed to avert full-scale civil war. Mr Straw did not rule out the possibility of the Nato force remaining in Macedonia beyond the 30 days agreed by the alliance's members.
