Markos Kyprianou, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, welcomed the European Parliament’s vote on 16 May 2006 on the Fortified Foods Regulation. This legislation was to lay down common EU rules on the addition of vitamins, minerals and other substances to foods. A positive list of vitamins and minerals that can be added to food was included in the proposed Regulation, as were criteria for setting minimum and maximum levels for such nutrients in food. The Council was expected to formally adopt the Regulation in the following weeks, and it would enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Communities. |
