The reputation of Karel van Miert's Directorate-General for competition policy (DGIV) for setting a Stakhanovite pace within the European Commission has suffered some self-inflicted damage.

A note recently distributed amongst officials warned that the computers in the department would be turned off for the evening at the extremely late hour of 16.30.

The heads of the Union's state-sponsored banks and airlines should be able to sleep a little easier in the knowledge that Europe's state-aid police will not be pursuing them 24 hours a day.
