This was the introduction of a new-generation air traffic management system which was to be vital for managing the growth in air traffic. SESAR was aimed at enhancing the safety and the environmental performance of air transport and was designed to ensure that Europe would remain at the forefront of the world aviation market. The Commission was to develop this major industrial project together with Eurocontrol and, in a second phase, with industrial partners. The launch on 17 November 2005 initiated the definition phase (2005-2007) of the project, to be followed by a development phase (2008-2013) and a deployment phase (2014-2020).
