Under new working time regulations in the UK which came into force in 1998 when the British government implemented the European Union Working Time Directive, an employment appeal tribunal ruled in March 2002 that employees on long-term sick leave may be entitled to claim holiday pay. The ruling threatens to add millions of pounds to company wage bills.
