Book abstract:

This book offers an introduction to the European Union and the role of Europe in British politics. The book is divided into three main parts. The history and structure of the European Union is examined. This section focuses on three periods in the development of the European Union. Firstly, on 1945-1985 from a British perspective followed by sections on 1985-1999 covering the Maastricht Treaty and monetary union and finally, developments to the European Union at the turn of the century. The second major section focuses on the impact of Europe on British politics. There are three parts to this section which are: Sovereignty and constitutional change; Policy and the decision making process; The impact of European legislation on British policy issues. The final major section, entitled 'Participation', examines the electoral systems to the European Parliament, the relationship of British political parties to Europe and finally the effects of the European Union on its citizens. The book also provides analysis of what the European Union's future may hold in terms of enlargement and constitutional reform.

As a second edition of a book originally published in 1994, events since then are fully covered such as the introduction of the Euro and the Amsterdam Treaty.

Overall, the book provides a good basic introduction to the European Union and is aimed at students from A level to degree level.

Colin Pilkington is Chief Examiner in GCSE Politics for AQA.
