EurActiv reports comments by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the Bundestag, 17 March 2010. She said that European Union rules need to change so that countries that repeatedly break the bloc's economic guidelines can be expelled from the euro zone.

Subsequently, in an interview broadcast on France24 on the 21 March 2010, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso said that expelling a country from the euro zone would be against current EU treaty rules.
