Byers calls for EU to be streamlined and more radical

Report of a speech by Stephen Byers, the (UK) Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to the Britain in Europe group, London, 27.1.00. He argued that for the British people to become more pro-European the EU needed radical economic and political reform, and for Europe to pursue policies to become more competitive. He also discussed the issue of the timing of a referendum on Britain's participation into the euro.
