Date: 20/06/1996 The Commission's briefing for diplomats from about 40 non-EU countries on the beef crisis left quite a few more than a little perplexed about the whole business, and who can blame them? One Russian was particularly bewildered after the day-long information meeting during which veterinary experts from the Union countries and officials from the Commission filled in the gory details about gelatine, tallow, semen, bone meal and beefsteak. “They gave me so much paper!” wailed the Russian, admitting he was having trouble deciphering what it all meant. It should all make for a very interesting internal memo back to HQ in Moscow. |
