Date: 30/10/1997 Anyone who has been following the often turbulent preparations for next month's European jobs summit will know that it was France which led the way in pushing for the meeting to be held. While many EU governments (including Luxembourg, which will host the meeting) have, at some point, questioned whether such an event was really necessary, Paris has always stood firm. Indeed, it was French Premier Lionel Jospin who first floated the idea at June's Amsterdam summit. Yet a glance at Jospin's prime ministerial diary for November shows that he may not even be able to stay for all of the Luxembourg summit. It is to be held on 20-21 November, clashing with Jospin's Socialist Party annual national congress in Brest, France. |
