Abstract:

This book is part of the Global Market Briefing series which provide a country-by-country information resource for international managers, analysts, entrepreneurs and consultants engaged in international business and market development. Kazakhstan has matured economically and has graduated from IMF tutelage with the recent closure of the Fund’s resident representation. It is sustaining a significant economic upswing and has become well-integrated into major global and regional markets especially for hydrocarbons, metals and grains.

The work is organised in four parts. Part one provides a general background to the business environment including an introduction to Kazakhstan’s recent economic performance. Contributors go on to address such issues as the foreign investment climate and the legal framework for investments, the banking system and capital markets, investment funds and venture capital. This section closes with two special interest articles covering the 10 years of Kazakhstan’s relationship with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the costs of administrative delays associated with market entry specially prepared by the Foreign Investment Advisory Service of the World Bank.

Part two presents a closer examination of the country’s economy by sector. This section includes reports on the oil and gas industry, mining, metallurgy and some of the faster growing sectors such as telecoms, IT and food and beverages as well as the mainstay sectors of agro-industries, healthcare, manufacturing, paper and cement. Tourism, insurance and the office market are also featured in this edition. The fiscal and financial sectors are addressed in part three, with overviews of the banking system, regulation of the financial markets, taxation, auditing and accounting, the legal environment for domestic and international business and corporate activity. Part four presents the theme of operating a business in Kazakhstan and covers such topics as commercial property rights, land ownership, arbitration and dispute resolution between legal entities, intellectual property and employment law.

The work will be useful to all those seeking to do business with Kazakhstan.
