US eases grip on internet oversight group

The US agreed on the 30 September 2009 to relinquish some oversight of the global group that controls basic elements of the internet's architecture, easing concerns that the US has undue influence over the web's evolution.

The private, not-for-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) will become more self-governing, subject to advisory reviews by panels including one that represents 100 countries.
