BELGIAN rail operator SNCB has been urged to reconsider its decision to axe the special train it ran from Brussels to the European Parliament's monthly plenary in Strasbourg.

The cancellation of the service, which left Brussels at 9am on the Monday of each plenary, was this week branded "incomprehensible" and "unacceptable" by MEPs.

Parliament's President Pat Cox has now been urged to press the company to reinstate the service.

Belgian Green deputy Pierre Jonckheer said: "Until the political decision is made to centralize the Parliament's activities in one location adequate transport facilities between Strasbourg and Brussels must be guaranteed."

Dutch Socialist Michiel van Hulten said of the decision: "This is another nail in the coffin of the Strasbourg chamber."

The rail company said it had cancelled the service due to ongoing repair work on the track near Thionville in France.
