France’s shipwrecked immigrants to claim asylum

French officials began considering asylum claims from around nine-hundred illegal immigrants rescued on 17.2.01 from a ship beached on the country's southern Riviera. Police have launched a major search for the ship's crew who fled after deliberately running the vessel aground on a beach near St Raphael.
