A power struggle inside the government in Ukraine brought tens of thousands of demonstrators out on to the streets of the capital, Kiev, 1 April 2007. Pro-Western President Viktor Yushchenko had threatened to dissolve parliament and call new elections. The pro-Russian governing coalition led by Viktor Yanukovych resisted the move. As the week progressed thousands of protesters staged fresh demonstrations in Ukraine over the political crisis which is dividing the country.
