In 2004 the aquaculture sector of EU25 countries represented 18.8% of the total fisheries production. 78% of the aquaculture production was in marine waters: 63% from the Atlantic and 16% from the Mediterranean. 45% of the total aquaculture production was of fish and 55% of molluscs. For the 4 candidate countries (BG, HR, RO and TR) aquaculture contributed 16.2% to the total fisheries production, 51% was from inland waters and 96% was of fish. For Norway and Iceland combined, aquaculture accounted for 13.1% of the total fisheries production, with all but a very minor part (less than 1%) being from seawater and of fish. |
