Encouraging people to choose ways of getting around that reduce their contribution to climate change is the aim of the fifth annual European Mobility Week running from 16 to 22 September 2006. Over 165 million citizens in more than 1,050 towns and cities across Europe and in other parts of the world will be participating in sustainable urban mobility initiatives during the week. With cars responsible for over 10% of the EU's emissions of climate-changing greenhouse gases, as well as air pollutants that can harm human health and the environment, European Mobility Week encourages people to make greater use of more benign alternatives. These include walking, cycling, using public transport and car-sharing. European Mobility Week promotes a lasting shift towards sustainable mobility as participating towns and cities have to introduce permanent measures, such as new cycle lanes or public transport services. |
