European leaders who want to keep Turkey out of the union and talk instead of a "privileged partnership" with Ankara were denounced as irresponsible by Olli Rehn, the EU's enlargement commissioner on the 4 October 2006. Mr Rehn said those advocating a privileged partnership with Turkey - including Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and Nicolas Sarkozy, the French interior minister and prospective presidential candidate - were turning Turks against Europe. |
