East Germany's ex-communists look set to pass a milestone on the road to respectability, September 2006, If opinion polls are correct, the Left party - successor to Socialist Unity party - will be returned to power in two regional state governments, Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on Sunday 17 September 2006, 17 years after the fall of the communist regime.
