Germany's Federal Statistical Office reported 10 October 2006 that the provisional results of cash statistics indicate that the statutory social insurance funds – comprising statutory health, long-term nursing care, accident, and pension insurance, the farmers’ old-age assistance scheme and services of the Federal Employment Agency – achieved a surplus of€8.5 billion in the first half of 2006. In the first half of 2005, the social insurance funds recorded a deficit of €7.1 billion.
