Following the earthquake that struck Indonesia near the Javanese city of Yogyakarta on Saturday, 27 May 2006, the EU immediately mobilised to assess needs and offer help. In Brussels, the co-ordination machinery drew together the Austrian Presidency of the EU, the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO) and the Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC), as well as the EU Situation Centre and Civil-Military Cell of the EU Military Staff. |
