The Scientific Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids and Materials in Contact with Food (AFC Panel) of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), on 5 May 2006, announced that there was no need to further review the safety of aspartame nor to revise the previously established Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for aspartame. This followed its evaluation of a new long-term study on the carcinogenicity of aspartame conducted by the European Ramazzini Foundation in Bologna, Italy.
