Press Release: Commission addresses specificities of social services

A new Communication adopted by the European Commission on 26 April 2006 attempted to clarify the effects of European law on social services, especially given the rapid changes in 'social services of general interest'. The Communication presented for the first time a list of these services' specific characteristics and reviewed the support which they received from various existing community instruments. The services in question differ from country to country, but can include sectors such as social housing, childcare or services towards families and persons in need. However, the Communication did not deal with health services, which was to fall under a separate initiative from the European Commission.
