Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is to take his fight against protectionism to the European Council in Brussels, 23-24 March 2006. He had sought support from other Member States for a declaration denouncing protectionism, but abandoned the plan due to lack of support. The Austrian Presidency of the European Union wants the Summit to focus on the EU's economic agenda and a new EU energy policy, and has told Italy that Finance Ministers could debate the issue of protectionism at an informal meeting in Vienna in April. However, Italian analysts believe Mr Berlusconi is bound to use the Summit to attack French protectionism, while portraying himself as a liberal.
