Article reported that Greeceā€™s Prime Minister George Papandreou attempted on the 6 June 2011 to win backing from his fractious government for a fresh austerity package overseen by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, amid threats of mass resignations by socialist deputies and unprecedented street protests in Athens. Unless reforms were accelerated, the country would possibly lose the backing of European partners and be forced to default.

Speculation mounted about the measures in the new austerity package being put to a referendum.
