Abstract:
The collapse of communism opened up the economies of the former Soviet bloc, and in the 1990s market mechanisms were introduced and opportunities for international trade increased. Many of the countries openly expressed aspirations to become members of the European Union. This work looks at the changing patterns of the economic processes at work across Europe and the role played by EU harmonisation and transition policies.

The book is organised in three parts. Part one explores the exchange of goods and services through interregional and international trade, with chapters addressing the theoretical aspects and case studies from the Polish-Lithuanian border and Latvia. Part two examines the regional and migration issues from an EU perspective, giving special attention to transition economies, labour markets, urban infrastructure, industrial specialisation and cluster formation. Part three encompasses a wide range of issues of a fiscal, financial, and environmental nature and brings together three chapters that share a macroeconomic perspective.

The book will interest researchers and policy makers and planners in organisations dealing with economic integration and transitional economy issues.
