On 14.12.00 the European Commission adopted a proposal to prolong for two years the existing production aid regime laid down in the common market organisation for hops. In light of the success of this existing regime to encourage production to adapt to demand, the proposal foresees no change to the current rate of aid to hops producers of 480 €/hectare. The Commission proposes also to review the entire hops regime in a report to be published before 31.12.02. The effectiveness of the 'special temporary measures' that apply in the hops regime - namely set-aside and permanent grubbing up will be taken into account in this review, as they are set to run out in 2002. The review will also consider the potential impact of enlargement of the European Union on the sector, given that a number of candidate countries are important hop producers. This proposal is due to be adopted by the EU's Council of Ministers and would be applicable from 1.1.01.
