The European Commission has adopted a Communication presenting the results of the Auto-Oil II programme. Auto-Oil II is the second technical programme aimed at finding the most cost-effective ways to reduce emissions from road transport. A wide range of stakeholders, including Member States' administrations, industry trade associations and NGOs, were involved. Emissions from road transport of the traditional, regulated pollutants are expected to have fallen to 20% of their 1995 levels by 2020, leading to a marked improvement in air quality. On the other hand, some air quality problems such as particulate matter and ozone are a long way from being solved. And the improvements for the traditional pollutants have not been matched in the case of CO2, where emissions from road transport continue to rise. Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström explained: “There is some positive news coming out of Auto-Oil II but it is clear from these results that air quality remains a problem in Europe, and to tackle them successfully we will need to address all emission sources, and not only road transport.”
