The European Commission is earmarking €50 million to support cities pioneering the development of urban transport. 'Following on from political discussions and applied research, the Commission has decided to provide funding for cities pioneering the development of urban transport' said Loyola de Palacio, the Commission Vice-President with special responsibility for energy and transport. The new initiative, to be known as CIVITAS (CIty - VITAlity - Sustainability), will support the best integrated and innovative proposals for the development of urban transport put forward by committed European cities. In this way, the Commission wishes to encourage competitive alternatives to the use of cars in city centres and combat the growing congestion and pollution of European cities. |
