Press Release: Commission proposes to improve public access to environmental information

On 3.7.00 the European Commission adopted a proposal for a Directive on public access to environmental information. The proposal is designed to replace the 1990 Directive on the freedom of access to information on the environment and is based on the experience gained with this Directive. A report on this experience accompanies the Commission's proposal. The proposal is intended to contribute to an increased public awareness of environmental matters and to more effective and meaningful participation by citizens and NGOs in environmental decision-making.
