Press Release: Fundamental rights in the European Union: Commission stresses added value of future Charter

At the initiative of António Vitorino, European Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs and President Prodi's representative in the Convention responsible for drawing up the Charter, the Commission adopted on the 13 September 2000 a Communication lending its support, in principle, to the preliminary draft Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union published on 28 July 2000 by the Praesidium of the Convention. The Commission will present another Communication later on the form which the Charter should take.
