Book abstract:

Now in its eleventh edition, 'The European Companion' is the authoritative annual work of reference on the European Union's leading people and institutions. This edition has been completely revised and updated. In particular, there are considerable changes in the ordering of contents. The book is no longer split into Biographies and Institutions, but instead the sections are by institution and these incorporate the relevant biographical information. These changes are intended to make The European Companion more user-friendly.

The two elements of the book remain: the structure and role of the main institutions and biographies of leading EU politicians and personnel from National governments, COREPER, the Council, the Commission, Parliament, the European Investment Bank, the Economic and Social Committee and the Court of Justice and Court of Auditors. It details the structure and functions of politicians and civil servants within institutions, explains the composition, powers and voting procedures of the EU Council, shows the number of representatives for each country and sets out easy to follow summaries of the European Legislative process.

As a tool for building profiles and contacts it provides a biography of over 1650 individuals. A typical entry will include name, position, career history, address, email address, telephone and fax numbers, date of birth, education, publications, recreations and languages spoken. A photograph is included with each entry.

The Companion has a foreword by The Rt. Hon. Chris Patten, Commissioner for External Relations.
