Ms de Palacio, Vice President of the European Commission in charge of Transport and Energy, addressed, on May 15th, in Istanbul, the delegates of the World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC 2000). The WRC is organised by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), a United Nations Agency. In her speech; Ms de Palacio asked the participants to support European requests for frequencies and in particular for the GALILEO programme of navigation by satellite. She pointed out that the European Union is open to co-operation with all the other parties in order to allow an independent and complementary development of GALILEO next to the other Global Positioning Systems, like the American GPS and Russian GLONASS.
