Press Release: Commission grants EUR80 million to upgrade European Internet for Research

In an effort to upgrade Europe's high-performance Internet infrastructure, the European Commission has urged the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) of the Member States to upgrade the current European Internet infrastructure for research and education facilities. The high-speed, high capacity Internet infrastructure will interconnect the national research and education networks within the EU and other European countries. The Commission's contribution to this project is estimated at 40 percent of the total expenditure, i.e. €80 million, the remainder being covered by the participating countries.
