At a recent congress, the European Association of Hospital Managers (EAHM) decided to publish a journal for its members that would provide important models for managing and shaping the hospital of the future. The EAHM believes that its members' 'front line' role places them in an optimal position to assess the needs of the modern hospital. In particular, Hospital looks at the challenges now developing at the European level, as it is in Brussels that the framework for the European hospital of the future is being debated, formulated and decided.

The journal presents a mixture of items. There are articles looking at trends that will make an impact upon hospital management, such as waste disposal; interviews with and opinions from individuals in the industry; case studies of hospital services; studies of the impact of European legislation and proposed legislation; and news items from around the European Union. A 'Service' section summarises advances in particular areas of medicine, such as minimal invasive surgery and progress in radiotherapy. There is also a more light-hearted section, which covers topics from Barbie to the presentation of hospitals on television dramas. The articles are short and easy to read, and although largely aimed at EAHM members, should be of interest to others requiring up-to-date information on issues in hospital management.
