Working Europe: reshaping European employment systems: 'Working Europe' is a collection of articles offering a fresh analysis of the recent changes in the employment systems in Europe. The book describes and analyses the changes in employment systems that affect welfare policies, women's position in the labour market and other related issues. Among the many topics covered are: how labour markets are regulated; how various social security systems offered by the welfare state are related to the questions of labour markets and employment systems; how efficient labour market policies are in reducing unemployment; how employment is locally created and initiated; and in what ways gender and employment systems are related. The conclusions drawn relate to recent economic and societal changes, drawing attention to the need to analyse labour markets as part of societal structure. Nearly half of the contributors are from Finnish universities; the rest are drawn from the UK, Portugal, France, Germany, the United States and Sweden. The essays are taken from papers presented at a 1996 conference hosted by the International Working Party of Labour Market Segmentation Theorists to discuss European Employment Systems and the Welfare State. The book is aimed at an international audience of academics, researchers and policy-makers in employment studies, European studies, sociology, social policy and political science. |
