Annual inflation rates. EU annual inflation fell sharply to 1.3% in January 1998 from 1.6% in December 1997. A year earlier it was 2.2.%. The figure is according to the European Index of Consumer Prices (EICP), calculated as an average of the Harmonised Indices of Consumer Prices (HICPs) of Member States. The annual rate for each individual country was:
