At the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 17 November 2005 MEPs reached their first reading position on the draft REACH chemicals legislation. MEPs voted in favour of a legislative package that will require industry to register and test thousands of potentially harmful chemicals. However, the business lobby won concessions that will substantially reduce the amount of regulation imposed under the new legislation.

The next stage is that the Council of the European Union, under the UK Presidency, should agree a common position on the legislation, and this will hopefully be achieved by the end of 2005.
