Speaking on 1 September 2005, French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin promised to modernise the country's social model, overhaul its tax regime, and increase investment in public transport and social housing in his second wave of reform. Mr de Villepin went on to summarise progress during his first 100 days in office, and outlined his future strategy. He said his government had already made inroads into cutting unemployment - its top priority.
