After winning a court battle on 13 September 2005 the European Commission will be able to force governments of Member States to pursue criminal cases against those breaching EU laws. Although the ruling by the European Court of Justice concerned a dispute over EU environmental legislation, the decision could pave the way for stiffer penalties in other areas of EU legislation. |
