The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of the Canadian shipping company CP Ships by the German company TUI, which owns the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd. The Commission’s clearance is conditional upon the withdrawal of Hapag-Lloyd from two liner shipping conferences that operate between Europe and North America. In light of the commitment to withdraw from these conferences, the Commission has concluded that the transaction will not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any part of it.
