According to a Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) survey based on data from NTC Research, eurozone manufacturing contracted in April 2005 for the first time in 20 months. The figures reveal the scale of the economic slowdown across Europe, with France and Italy seeing a particularly sharp deterioration.

Separately, a report from the Institute for Supply Management showed US factory activity is also slowing - the US is a main market for European exports and a significant slowdown would have serious effects on the eurozone.
